Monitoring traffic at Lincoln Tunnel

Few people are aware that there are Port Authority Bridge and Tunnel agents stationed inside the walls of the Lincoln Tunnel. The employees stand watch inside the three foot by six foot pressurized booths which are located about a third of the way into the three, mile and a half tubes. They are often the first responders to an accident, disabled vehicle or fire and are a small but important part of a mult-million dollar Traffic Management Center.

The nerve center of the operation is located in the shadows of the Lincoln Tunnel approach road on the New Jersey side. Dozens of cameras are controlled and observed by agents 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, to monitor and control the flow of traffic in and around the tunnel.
