"Grow Greener Grass, Right Where You Are"
by Vicki Hess
Sometimes we tend to dwell on the past or the future instead of the present. Try these two strategies to be really present at work – especially during trying situations:
The Confidence Inventory helps you avoid “Fly Away Thinking” and engage in “Funnel Thinking”. This is where you take the entire negative, out of control thoughts and funnel them into something more productive. Remember, you are in control of your own thoughts about any given situation.
Another important part of creating Real-time Presence is to create a Connecting Presence with person you are addressing in the tough situation. In this case, this is your boss. While your initial thoughts might include anger or disappointment, try these few steps before you open your mouth to proceed.
1. Focus on facts – not emotions
2. Listen without prejudice – quiet your inner voice
3. Rephrase what you heard
4. Assure the person that you understand their perspective or ask more questions so that you do
5. Agree on negotiated next steps
